Wimbledon Adopts Video Challenge Technology This Season.

The Championships tennis court with replay system

The tournament joins the US and Australian Opens in implementing video review systems.

Replay technology will be launched at The Championships this year.

Athletes are granted the right to contest specific calls made by the chair umpire, following the system already in place at both the US Open and the Aussie major.

The new system will be accessible on the main stadium and Court One for the duration of the Championships and on the other four show courts when they are staging singles contests.

This move follows just a year after the All England Club introduced electronic line calling, which brought an end to the centuries-old role of line officials.

Scope of Challenges

Competitors cannot to challenge the call of the ELC system, but they can ask for the official to review specific situations, including:

  • Whether a tennis ball has bounced twice.
  • Whether a shot made contact with an rival's racket or body during play.
  • Potential hindrance end of a rally.

Importantly, there will be an unlimited number on the number of challenges a competitor can ask for.

A Recent Example

An illustrative case occurred in Indian Wells recently, where a top player used the video challenge against Jack Draper.

Draper admitted it was a tough situation for the umpire, but thought his rival had "used the regulations effectively."

The umpire viewed a replay and ruled the player was responsible for hindrance, granting the rally to his opponent.

Broader Adoption

Video reviews aren't exclusive to Grand Slams. The system has been in use at the American major for two years and the Aussie Open since 2025.

Additionally, it is increasingly prevalent on the WTA circuit, and by next season the men's ATP Tour will have video reviews in place at every one of its tournaments.

Further Updates

Another change at The Championships this year will be the introduction of visual indicators on displays to support the verbal announcements from the ELC system.

This solves instances where fans have sometimes been unsure if a ball was out or in.

In other news, with precisely 100 days to go until the beginning of the Championships, organizers have also announced an expansion in daily capacity at the qualifiers in the qualifying venue.
