The Himalayan nation's Political Landscape Sees Major Alliance Formed Between Media Personality and Ex-Rapper Mayor

In a notable move ahead of next year's general election, a pair of prominent figures in Nepali politics have joined forces. This alliance emerges in the wake of large-scale and deadly young people's demonstrations that shook the country earlier this year and ultimately led to the ouster of the sitting government.

A Pledge to Tackle Youth Concerns

Media figure Rabi Lamichhane, who heads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a former rapper, have publicly vowed to prioritize the grievances raised by the new generation. This promise comes after the violent anti-corruption protests that occurred in September, which led to significant casualties.

"Consensus should not be as the leader seeks, it must be what the nation requires," remarked Lamichhane after the deal was finalized.

The late summer revolt was sparked by public anger over a temporary government ban on social media platforms. This action acted as a catalyst for deeper discontent stemming from a long period of economic stagnation and longstanding accusations of deep-rooted political corruption.

Terms of the New Political Agreement

According to the formal agreement, the roles for the approaching election have been clarified. Rabi Lamichhane will continue to serve as the chairperson of the RSP. In turn, Balendra Shah will be the alliance's candidate for the position of prime minister in the election scheduled for 5 March.

  • Rabi Lamichhane: A well-known fifty-one-year-old TV host, he founded the RSP in 2022, channeling widespread discontent with the nation's established political class. He has in the past held the posts of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was not long ago released on bail in a case involving alleged cooperative fraud and organized crime.
  • Balendra Shah (Balen): The thirty-five-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is viewed as a central figure in Nepal's current political transition. He played a role in forming the caretaker government that took over after the previous administration was dissolved.

Broader Government Consultations Underway

In a related event, the sitting interim prime minister recently conducted consultations with several leading political figures. These discussions included ex- prime ministers and the presidents of other major parties, marking the first such dialogue since the time of the uprising.

Following these meetings, the prime minister took to social media to state that holding a credible election is a shared responsibility. The message affirmed the government's commitment to guaranteeing a secure and fear-free environment for the polls, adding that efforts are being made to eliminate any room for doubt.
