British Air Force Typhoon FGR4s have operated alongside French warplanes in a coordinated attack on an underground arms cache in Syrian territory used by the IS group, per a report from the UK Ministry of Defence.

The site, identified by intelligence, was thought to be storing arms and explosives, the release indicated, and was situated in hills just to the north of the historic site of Palmyra in central Syria.

"Our fighter planes utilized Paveway IV guided bombs to strike a series of access tunnels leading to the facility... early reports suggest the target was engaged successfully," the MoD said.

There was no sign of any harm to civilians in the operation on Saturday evening and all the aircraft returned safely, the defence officials confirmed.

The Typhoon fighters were supported by a Voyager refuelling tanker.

Daesh - alternatively referred to as Daesh - enforced jihadist rule over parts of both Syria and Iraq until 2019.

"This strike underscores the UK's leading role, and resolve to stand shoulder to shoulder with our partners, to eliminate any resurgence of IS and their violent and radical beliefs in the region," the British Defence Secretary the Defence Secretary stated.

UK warplanes have carried out surveillance missions over Syrian airspace to "prevent any efforts to regroup" of the group following its defeat at the battle of Baghuz in 2019, the MoD reported.

"I want to thank every member of the UK armed forces who took part in this operation for their skill and their courage," he added. "They were part of thousands of British troops on duty over the holidays. This mission, to eliminate terrorist threats who endanger our way of life, demonstrates how British military are ready to step up, continuously, ensuring Britain's security within its borders and influential overseas."

In December, the US military carried out what it called a "major assault" targeting IS targets in Syria, after an ambush claimed the lives of two US servicemembers and a civilian linguist in Palmyra.

The U.N. estimates IS still has roughly 5-7 thousand fighters in Syria and Iraq.
